A short history

The Cherokee, Creek and Yuchi used the area as hunting and burial ground, and Daniel Boone hunted and explored it in the 1760s. Settlers followed his trail; the crossroads named for Leonard Shoun, Shouns, is now part of Mountain City (Tennessee Encyclopedia).

Tennessee created Johnson County from Carter County in 1836. Its commissioners bought twenty-five and one-half acres from William P. Vaught and laid off a county seat named Taylorsville for Col. James P. Taylor; the first courthouse was finished in 1837, a second in 1894 and the present one in 1958. In 1885 the town took the name Mountain City (Tennessee Encyclopedia; UT CTAS). Source conflict: the Tennessee Encyclopedia says Taylorsville was incorporated in 1866, nearly two decades before the 1885 name change; the University of Tennessee’s MTAS directory dates the town’s incorporation to a private act of 1905 (Feb 1, 1905). We print both dates.

The Taylorsville Reporter, founded in 1844, became the Tennessee Tomahawk in 1885; today’s paper is The Tomahawk. Railroad service reached Mountain City in 1910 to haul timber and manganese, and miners and timber cutters settled along the line (Tennessee Encyclopedia).

In May 1925 Mountain City hosted the first Mountain City Fiddlers Convention, a gathering the town calls a milestone in Appalachian music; the 2026 convention was held at Heritage Hall on Oct 2–3. The home of Roderick R. Butler, the congressman said to have urged the town’s new name, is listed on the National Register and still stands near the center of town (Town of Mountain City).

TVA’s Watauga Lake, finished in the 1940s, covered Old Butler to the south. Today Mountain City is a town with a mayor and board of aldermen; in 2024 it merged the Cold Springs water utility into its own, and in 2026 it won $22.5 million to rebuild its wastewater system after Hurricane Helene. The 2020 Census counted 2,415 people (TIGERweb).
