  • Why stop: walk the courthouse square and downtown shops, let the kids loose at Houston Park’s splash pad or Kefauver Park, then drive on to Fort Loudoun, the Sequoyah Birthplace Museum or the Cherohala Skyway.
  • Before you go: Madisonville is on Eastern time (ET). City Hall is open weekdays 8 AM–4:30 PM ET, and Tuesday, Nov. 3, is a city election day.
  • Don’t confuse: this is Madisonville, Tennessee (Monroe County, about 5,100 people) — not Madisonville, Kentucky. The old Hiwassee College campus, Vonore, Tellico Plains and Sweetwater are outside the city.

A short history

This was Overhill Cherokee country: the General Assembly created Monroe County in 1819 from former Cherokee lands and named it for President James Monroe (Tennessee Encyclopedia). The city’s history says the county court was organized in 1820, and the first county seat, “Old Tellico,” stood two miles east of today’s town on the Old Federal Road. An 1825 act moved the courts to the town of Tellico, which was renamed Madisonville in 1830 in honor of Madison Greenway, who circulated the petition to the legislature.

The Monroe County Courthouse went up in 1897; its construction coincided with the Louisville & Nashville Railroad’s plans for an Atlanta–Knoxville line through Madisonville, the county’s second major railroad (Tennessee Encyclopedia). Main Street notes that early-1900s photographs show the downtown streets full of people trading mules — the tradition behind today’s Madisonville Trade Days. The antebellum Cannon-Stickley House, with its double Greek Revival portico, also survives.

Hiwassee College, just outside the city, educated students for 170 years before closing in May 2019 (UMNews); its graduates included Postmaster General David M. Key and Gov. Albert H. Roberts. Source conflict: the Tennessee Encyclopedia’s Monroe County entry and UMNews give the founding year as 1849; the encyclopedia’s Hiwassee College entry says 1850. Madisonville was also the birthplace of U.S. Sen. C. Estes Kefauver (1903–1963), the Democratic nominee for vice president in 1956, and of Confederate Gen. John C. Vaughn (1824–1875).

UT MTAS lists Madisonville’s incorporation under the Private Acts of 1865–66, with an incorporation date of Feb. 1, 1866; the present charter dates from 1915. Madisonville had 5,132 people in the 2020 Census; the state’s 2026 estimate, per MTAS, is 5,428.
