  • Why stop: it’s the gateway town for the Obed gorges and Frozen Head — grab maps at the NPS visitor center, then coffee or lunch on Main or Kingston Street.
  • Before you go: Frozen Head is mid-renovation (many trails and all campsites closed) and small-town hours change — check the linked pages.
  • Don’t confuse: Wartburg is in Morgan County on Eastern time; the Big South Fork’s Twin Arches and Charit Creek are in Scott County, and Sgt. York’s Pall Mall is in Fentress.

A short history

In 1844 George F. Gerding, a New York businessman, organized the East Tennessee Colonization Company with Theodore de Cock of Antwerp and bought about 170,000 acres across Morgan and neighboring plateau counties to settle German and Swiss immigrants. The first fifty settlers arrived from Mainz in 1845, with two more groups in 1846; they named their town for Wartburg Castle in Germany.

The colonists were farmers and craftsmen — the short-lived Wartburg Piano Company, furniture and cabinet makers, a cigar maker, vineyards and orchards for wine and brandy — plus a surprising number of professionals: an architect, a university-trained musician, eight physicians and a German nobleman. Land-price quarrels, slow development, disputes between the Reformed and Lutheran congregations and the Civil War thinned the colony; by 1870 only 57 German-born and 41 Swiss-born residents were left in the county.

That same year, 1870, Morgan County moved its seat from the fading town of Montgomery to Wartburg. The present courthouse was finished in 1904, and Wartburg was incorporated under its current state charter in 1905 (a general-law mayor–aldermanic city). The National Park Service runs the Obed Wild & Scenic River from downtown, and Frozen Head State Park sits just east of town.
