Kingston sits where the Tennessee and Clinch Rivers meet and is the seat of Roane County. It’s a natural half-day from Oak Ridge: frontier fort, river overlooks, and a quirky capital story without the Smokies crowds.
John Sevier established a fort here in 1792; by 1797 the post on the hill above the rivers was guarding the frontier. The restored fort opened to the public in 1996. Read the place story in the Tennessee Encyclopedia and confirm visit details with the City of Kingston.
Under the 1805 Tellico Treaty, Kingston was to become Tennessee’s capital — and on September 21, 1807 the legislature met here briefly before returning to Knoxville. A monument in town marks the “Capital for a Day.” Deeper county context: Roane County →.
