- Why go: one of East Tennessee’s clearest, quietest big lakes, plus real TVA history.
- How long: a day trip, or a lake-house weekend.
- Mistake to avoid: planning a winter boat day without checking levels — TVA lowers Norris about 29 ft for flood storage.
Why go
Norris Reservoir runs 73 miles up the Clinch River and 56 up the Powell, with 809 miles of shoreline — the largest reservoir on any Tennessee River tributary. ⓘ TVA
TVA history
Norris Dam was begun in 1933, months after TVA was created, and finished in 1936 — TVA’s first dam, named for Sen. George Norris. TVA built the town of Norris to house its workers as a model planned community, and its 1930s lakeside demonstration parks became the start of Tennessee’s state parks. ⓘ TVA Next stop on the story: Oak Ridge →
