Athens, Tennessee

McMinn County’s seat, “The Friendly City,” midway between Knoxville and Chattanooga — Mayfield ice cream, a county-history museum, Tennessee Wesleyan’s 1857 Old College and the story of the 1946 Battle of Athens.

  • Why stop: tour the Mayfield creamery for a free scoop, spend an hour in the Living Heritage Museum, walk Tennessee Wesleyan’s campus and the downtown murals around the courthouse square, then stretch your legs on the Eureka Trail or at Athens Regional Park.
  • Before you go: Athens is on Eastern time (ET), like Knoxville and Chattanooga, just off I-75. The museum is closed Sunday and Monday, and Mayfield gives no tours on Wednesday or Saturday.
  • Don’t confuse: this is Athens, Tennessee (McMinn County, about 14,000 people) — not Athens, Georgia, Alabama or Ohio, or the city in Greece. Calhoun, Etowah, Englewood and Starr Mountain are elsewhere in the county, not in town.

A short history

This was Cherokee country, between the Overhill towns of Great Tellico to the north and Great Hiwassee to the south, until the Calhoun Treaty of February 1819 — the “Hiwassee Purchase.” The legislature created McMinn County that November, and the first seat was at Calhoun on the Hiwassee. The county seat moved to the more central Athens in 1823; the town was laid out on 35 acres along Eastanallee Creek (spelled “Eastnalle” on the city’s history page) from land obtained from William Lowry and Joseph Calloway, and the legislature named it Athens on Aug. 23, 1822. The Tennessee Encyclopedia says Athens was chartered in 1822; UT MTAS gives the present corporation’s date as Nov. 1, 1870 (Private Acts 1869–70), and the city has run under a council-manager charter since 1953.

Construction of the Hiwassee Railroad, chartered to link Knoxville with Dalton, Georgia, began in 1837; after a halt, the East Tennessee and Georgia Railroad resumed the work in 1849, and Athens was its headquarters until 1855. In 1836 U.S. Army troops came to Athens to coordinate Cherokee removal, which became the forced removal of 1838 — the Trail of Tears. Old College at what is now Tennessee Wesleyan was completed in 1857. McMinn County voted narrowly against secession in 1861, and the war divided Athens families for years afterward. In 1921 the 14-mile stretch of the Lee Highway (US 11) from Athens to Calhoun became Tennessee’s first concrete highway.

On August 1, 1946, returning World War II veterans running a reform ticket confronted the county’s political machine after county officials locked themselves in the county jail with the ballot boxes. Several hours of gunfire ended when the front of the jail was dynamited; no one was killed. Within days the election commission swore in the veterans’ candidates, and the county later adopted Tennessee’s first county council-manager government. The “Battle of Athens” drew national headlines and is remembered each August with a commemoration festival.

The 1875 McMinn County Courthouse, designed by Knoxville architect Alexander C. Bruce, burned in November 1963, when a worker’s paint-stripping torch set the cupola’s old wood alight during a renovation; the same Daily Post-Athenian history elsewhere dates the loss to 1964. Athens grew around Mayfield Dairy, Tennessee Wesleyan, Starr Regional Medical Center and plants such as Denso; it had 14,084 people in the 2020 Census.
