- Why stop: walk the courthouse square and the Decatur Art Trail out to Veterans Memorial Park, look into the county museum and the library’s research room, eat barbecue or diner breakfast, then head for the lake ramps — or to Blythe Ferry and the Cherokee Trail of Tears State Park southwest of town.
- Before you go: Decatur is on Eastern time (ET), like Knoxville and Chattanooga. The museum keeps short weekday hours; call ahead.
- Don’t confuse: this is Decatur, Tennessee (Meigs County, about 1,600 people) — not Decatur, Alabama, Georgia or Illinois. Blythe Ferry, the Hiwassee Refuge, Watts Bar Dam and Ten Mile are elsewhere in the county, not in town.

A short history
The land north of the Hiwassee River was Cherokee country until the treaties of 1817 and 1819. The first settlers of what became Meigs County took up land in the Ten Mile Valley to the north; later families settled near the site of Decatur. When the county was created from Rhea County in 1836, Decatur was laid out as its seat on fifty acres donated by James Lillard and Leonard Brooks, chosen for its spot near the middle of the county, and named for Stephen Decatur, the naval hero of the War of 1812. The state incorporated the town in an act of 1837–38 (MTAS lists Dec. 1, 1838); it was incorporated again by a 1905 act, and its present charter dates from 2003.
Three brick courthouses have stood on Court Square. The first was completed in 1837 and replaced in 1882; that one was gutted by fire on April 2, 1902. A local contractor drew plans for the new building, Broadway Manufacturing Company of Knoxville finished it in late 1903 or early 1904 for $7,645, and it was built on the old foundation, nearly duplicating its predecessor (National Register nomination, 1978; the Tennessee Encyclopedia dates it to 1905). The clock was taken out of the tower after a fire around 1960.
Decatur Academy opened in the 1840s, and a school for African American children was started in 1869. When the academy closed in 1890, the Holston Conference of the Methodist Church ran a high school here until Meigs County High School was built in 1910. A railroad was expected in the 1840s and 1850s but never crossed the county; trade moved by riverboat landings such as Cottonport and Pinhook and by ferries — the Washington ferry west of town and Blythe Ferry to the southwest, where Cherokee people were forced across the Tennessee River in 1838. Bridges replaced both of those ferries in the 1990s. As late as 1940 the county’s only industrial plant was the Decatur Hosiery Mills, opened in the late 1930s.
TVA’s Chickamauga Lake (1940) and Watts Bar Lake (1942) flooded much of Meigs County’s best bottomland but gave it about 225 miles of shoreline — the source of the “Shoreline County” name. Decatur, still the county’s only incorporated town, had 1,395 people in 2000 and 1,563 in the 2020 Census.
