A short history

The Tennessee General Assembly created McMinn County in 1819 from land the Cherokees ceded in the Hiwassee Purchase, and named it for Governor Joseph McMinn. Calhoun, laid out in 1820 across the Hiwassee River from the Cherokee Indian Agency, was the first county seat; the seat moved to the more central Athens in 1823, and Athens was chartered in 1822.

The Hiwassee Railroad began one of Tennessee’s first rail lines here in 1837, and the East Tennessee and Georgia Railroad finished it after 1849, with Athens as its headquarters until 1855. Riceville and Mouse Creek (now Niota) grew along the tracks; after the Civil War came Jellico Junction (later Englewood) and, in 1905, Etowah, built as the Atlanta Division headquarters of the Louisville & Nashville. In 1920 Harry T. Burn of Niota cast the deciding vote that made Tennessee the 36th state to ratify the Nineteenth Amendment, and in 1921 the county got Tennessee’s first concrete highway, on the Lee Highway from Athens to Calhoun.

On August 1, 1946, returning GIs overthrew a political machine that had seized the ballot boxes. The “Battle of Athens” ended with no one killed and led to reform of county government. After the war came new industry, the growth of Tennessee Wesleyan, and the rise of Mayfield Dairy Farms. The L&N Depot in Etowah, the Englewood Textile Museum, and the Living Heritage Museum in Athens keep that history today.
