A short history
Families from Virginia and North Carolina settled along the Watauga River in the late 1760s — William Bean, James Robertson, Valentine Sevier and John Carter among them. They formed the Watauga Association in 1772 to govern themselves, and in 1775 Richard Henderson’s Transylvania Purchase was negotiated with Cherokee leaders at Sycamore Shoals. During the Revolution settlers took refuge in Fort Watauga when Cherokee warriors led by Old Abram attacked, and in 1780 about 1,100 Overmountain Men gathered at the shoals before marching to victory at Kings Mountain.
In 1796 Tennessee’s new legislature created Carter County from Washington County and named it for Landon Carter, John Carter’s son and a State of Franklin leader; Elizabethton became the seat. The Doe River Covered Bridge went up in 1882, the same year Milligan College took its name, and in 1886 two brothers from the county, Robert Love Taylor and Alfred A. Taylor, ran against each other for governor in the “War of the Roses” — Bob won and later served again, and Alf was elected in 1920. The county was divided during the Civil War; Samuel P. Carter became a Union general.
The East Tennessee & Western North Carolina Railroad — the “Tweetsie” — reached the mountains in the late 1880s, and in the mid-1920s German-owned Bemberg and Glanzstoff rayon plants made Elizabethton an industrial town; a 1929 strike there, led largely by women, failed. In the 1940s TVA built Watauga Dam, flooding the valley for Watauga Lake. Much of the county’s east is now Cherokee National Forest, crossed by the Appalachian Trail, and the Watauga Historical Association’s work led to Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park.
