A short history
Cherokee, Creek and Yuchi people hunted these mountains before white settlement, and Daniel Boone hunted and explored the area in the 1760s. The first settlement grew up at Trade, where a buffalo trail met three wilderness trails and settlers, frontiersmen and Native Americans swapped goods. John Honeycutt built a cabin on Roan Creek, and before 1800 families had also settled at Little Doe, Shady Valley and Laurel Bloomery.
Johnson County shared its early history with Carter and Washington counties. In 1836 the General Assembly created it from Carter County and named it for Thomas Johnson, an early settler who had come to Doe Valley from Virginia; the first county court met at the home of his son William. Commissioners laid out a county seat named Taylorsville for Col. James P. Taylor, finished the first courthouse in 1837, and in 1885 the town took the name Mountain City. The present courthouse, the county’s third, was built in 1958.
Railroad service arrived in 1900 and reached Mountain City in 1910, hauling timber and manganese, and miners and timber crews set up camps along the line. In the 1940s TVA’s Watauga Dam flooded the valleys of Roan Creek and the Watauga River, and Butler moved to higher ground in 1948. Much of the county’s mountain land is now Cherokee National Forest, the Appalachian Trail follows its ridges, and Doe Mountain Recreation Area opened its slopes to riders, bikers and hikers.
