- Why stop: feed the trout at the fish hatchery, see the Blue Ridge Pottery and railroad rooms at the museums next door, then eat downtown on Main Avenue before heading out to the Nolichucky.
- Before you go: Erwin is on Eastern time (ET). Election Day is Tue Nov 3, and Town of Erwin offices are on the ballot. Unicoi County Hospital is closed after Hurricane Helene, so call 911 in an emergency.
- Good to know: the Chamber on S. Main Avenue has visitor information. Chestoa, Rock Creek, Rocky Fork State Park and the Appalachian Trail are outside the town limits, and the A.T. bridge over the Nolichucky is still out.

A short history
The Cherokee were the last people to use the valley as hunting ground, and long hunters and settlers arrived in the 1770s (Town of Erwin). Tennessee created Unicoi County from Washington and Carter counties on March 23, 1875; the county court took office in January 1876, and centrally located Erwin became the county seat (Tennessee Encyclopedia).
The place had gone by Greasy Cove, Unaka and Longmire, and the county surveyor’s 1876 town plat named it Vanderbilt. In 1879 the name was changed to Ervin for David J. N. Ervin, who had donated land for the county seat, but postal officials recorded it as Erwin and the mistake was never corrected (Tennessee Encyclopedia; Town of Erwin). Source conflict: the Town of Erwin’s history page says the town received a charter of incorporation on April 21, 1891; the University of Tennessee’s MTAS directory dates its incorporation to a private act of 1903 (Dec 1, 1903), and the town’s site carries the line “Established 1903.” We print both dates.
Railroad building from 1886 and the Carolina, Clinchfield and Ohio in 1908 made Erwin a railroad town, and a federal fish hatchery opened in the 1890s. The town counted 1,149 people in 1910 (Town of Erwin; Tennessee Encyclopedia).
Southern Potteries opened in Erwin in 1916 and made hand-painted Blue Ridge dinnerware, employing more than a thousand people in the 1940s before closing in 1957. Nuclear Fuel Services, which began as Davison Chemical, is also part of the town’s industrial history (Tennessee Encyclopedia).
Hurricane Helene flooded parts of Erwin in September 2024 and destroyed Unicoi County Hospital; Ballad Health broke ground on a new hospital in August 2026 and expects it to open in 2028. The town marked its 150th anniversary in 2026, and the 2020 Census counted 6,083 people (TIGERweb).
