A short history

Settlers reached the Watauga River in the late 1760s. In 1772 they formed the Watauga Association, and in 1775 Richard Henderson and Cherokee leaders negotiated the Transylvania Purchase at Sycamore Shoals. Fort Watauga sheltered settlers during the Revolution, and in 1780 about 1,100 Overmountain Men gathered at the shoals before the Battle of Kings Mountain (Tennessee Encyclopedia).

Carter County was created from Washington County in 1796 and named for Landon Carter, and Elizabethton became its seat. Source conflict: the Tennessee Encyclopedia says Elizabethton was established in 1797; the University of Tennessee’s MTAS directory dates its incorporation to a private act of 1799 (Dec 1, 1799); and the city’s own site says it was founded in 1799 and incorporated in 1905. We print all three.

The Doe River Covered Bridge and Milligan College both date from 1882. Brothers Robert Love Taylor and Alfred A. Taylor ran against each other for governor in the 1886 “War of the Roses,” and the railroad arrived in the late 1880s (Tennessee Encyclopedia).

In the mid-1920s German investors built the Bemberg and Glanzstoff rayon plants between the town and Sycamore Shoals. In 1929 women workers led walkouts over wages and working rules; the governor sent National Guard troops, and the strikes ended without recognition of the union. Rayon stayed a key industry into the late 1900s, and TVA built Watauga Dam and Watauga Lake upstream in the 1940s (Tennessee Encyclopedia).

Today Elizabethton is a city with a manager-council charter. Its council meets the second Thursday of the month at City Hall on Sycamore Street, and the 2020 Census counted 14,546 people (TIGERweb). Milligan University is inside the city limits.
