A short history

Jasper sits in the lower Sequatchie Valley, a few miles above the Tennessee River. When the legislature created Marion County from Cherokee lands in 1817, the first county court met at John Shropshire’s house, in what is now Whitwell; in 1819 the county seat moved here, and the new town was named in honor of Sergeant Jasper of Revolutionary War fame (Tennessee Encyclopedia).

The commissioners bought forty acres from Betsy Pack, a Cherokee woman — the town describes her as the daughter of Cherokee chief John Lowery — and the first courthouse went up in 1820 near the center of the tract, where today’s Marion County Courthouse stands. The town dates its founding to 1820; the legislature incorporated Jasper by a private act of 1851–52 (MTAS: Feb 1, 1852) (Tennessee Encyclopedia; Town of Jasper; MTAS).

The Civil War divided Marion County families between the two armies. From 1877 English investors built up the county’s coal and iron — mines at Whitwell, coke ovens at Victoria and blast furnaces at South Pittsburg. The Jasper Museum of History keeps the story of the Pryor Institute, a school remembered in its own room, alongside Civil War artifacts and photographs of early Jasper businesses (Tennessee Encyclopedia; Marion County).

Today Jasper is a town governed by a mayor and four aldermen elected at large under the general-law mayor-aldermanic charter; Valmont’s plant here builds steel structures for power lines, and Parkridge West Hospital serves the county. The 2020 Census counted 3,612 people (TIGERweb).
