Cheap East Tennessee weekend

Free state parks, overlooks, a lake day and a mountain drive — spend the money on gas and a cabin, not gate fees.

By My East Tennessee · Updated Oct 31, 2026 · How we check facts

In 30 seconds
  • Free to enter: Tennessee State Parks charge no access fee at any state park, and the NPS lists the Obed as entrance-fee free. Some activities still need permits or reservations.
  • Smokies: no entrance fee, but the NPS requires a parking tag to park more than 15 minutes — see before you go and the Smokies hub.
  • Check first: several cheap campgrounds are mid-renovation (Norris Dam, Cove Lake) — each card shows the park’s notice.
  • How we check: we don’t publish prices or hours as fact; follow the official link on each card.

The stops

Saturday morning

State parkFree museum

Norris Dam State Park & Lenoir Museum

Free to enter like every Tennessee state park; TNSP says admission to the Lenoir Museum’s collection is free, and the park also keeps an 18th-century grist mill along Lost Creek. ⓘ ⓘ

Check first: TNSP: the East and West campgrounds are closed for renovation (intended reopening in 2026), and the trailhead at the Canteen Camp Store is inaccessible during construction.

Smokies on a budget? Entrance is free, but the NPS sells daily, weekly and annual parking tags you need to park more than 15 minutes ⓘ — plan with our Smokies hub.
