Island & shoreline camping: Norris & Cherokee lakes

Boat out to a wild TVA island, or keep it easy at a lakeside state park — here’s what’s allowed and what’s actually open.

By My East Tennessee · Updated Oct 31, 2026 · How we check facts

In 30 seconds
  • Islands: TVA says you can pitch a tent on one of the dozens of wild islands that dot its reservoirs. They’re undeveloped — no restrooms, water or lights — and stays are capped at 14 days in any 30.
  • Not every island is public: TVA’s undeveloped-recreation map is a guide only, not a property line. Check it, and respect private shoreline.
  • Check first: Norris Dam State Park’s campgrounds are closed for renovation, Big Ridge’s cabins are closed until April 1, 2027, and TVA’s dam campgrounds run March 15 – November 15.
  • Need a boat? Rentals and houseboats are on our marinas hub.

The idea

PrimitiveTVA

TVA island & shoreline camping

TVA allows tents and hammocks on undeveloped public land — including wild reservoir islands — for up to 14 consecutive days in any 30-day period; after that, move more than 10 miles before setting up again. ⓘ ⓘ ⓘ

Check first: TVA rules: pack out all trash, don’t hang lanterns on trees, no recreational ATVs or ORVs, and don’t leave an RV or gear unattended overnight. Fire restrictions can apply.

Cherokee Dam Campground

On the upstream side of Cherokee Dam near Jefferson City: 44 sites, all but five primitive sites with water and electric, and the operator says nearly every site has a lake view; a public boat ramp and swim area are next door. ⓘ ⓘ

Check first: TVA season: March 15 – November 15, so it closes for the winter in mid-November. The operator lists a 2-night minimum stay.
