A short history
The Tennessee General Assembly created Campbell County on September 11, 1806, from parts of Anderson and Claiborne counties, and named it for Colonel Arthur Campbell, a Revolutionary War soldier. Early settlers came for the wide, fertile Powell’s Valley; Fincastle and Speedwell are among the oldest settlements, and Jacksboro, founded in 1807, became the county seat.
Coal, iron and timber drew attention in the 1800s, and the railroads turned subsistence farms into a mining and lumber economy that lasted about three-quarters of a century. Jellico was founded in 1885 on the Kentucky line. Big Creek Gap became LaFollette after Indiana engineer Harvey LaFollette bought the mountain land in 1893; the town was organized in 1897, and its iron furnace employed as many as 1,500 workers before closing in 1926.
New Deal work changed the county: the Civilian Conservation Corps built Cove Lake State Park, the WPA added a post office in LaFollette, and TVA’s Norris Lake reshaped the southern valleys. Interstate 75 later brought tourists, boaters and new industry as “King Coal” declined in the early 1980s. Four-star General Carl W. Stiner, who commanded U.S. forces in the 1989 invasion of Panama, grew up on a Powell Valley farm. Elk returned to the North Cumberland plateau in 2000.
