Lakes · Holston River lakes
High mountain lake in the Cherokee National Forest near Elizabethton; the Appalachian Trail crosses the dam.
Watauga Lake is on the Watauga River, which flows into Boone Lake and the South Fork Holston, and from there to the Holston and the Tennessee River (TVA system). It sits high in the mountains east of Elizabethton, with much of its shoreline in the Cherokee National Forest.
It’s known for clear, cool water and mountain views. The Appalachian Trail crosses Watauga Dam, so you may see thru-hikers in season. As a tributary lake, its level changes a lot from summer to winter.
